Lynsey's
Tips
Here you will
find a selection of practice games and routines which I use
on a regular basis. If anyone has any tips etc that they
would like to share, please feel free to email them to me,
and I will add them to this page, along with the details of
the sender.
Consistency
-
The only
thing that will improve your consistency is playing
matches against players who are at the same level as
yourself, or players at a higher level. Match practice
is the best form of practice you can get.
-
To improve
your general consistency of hitting 20s try the
following:
Throw 100
(or more) darts at 20s and count how many are on target. At
each attempt try and beat your previous score. If you want
to make it harder on yourself deduct 1 each time you hit a 1
or a 5.
Grouping
There are a
couple of games I play to improve my grouping, both of which
involve bulls and 25s.
-
The first I normally play at home, or in the pub with
one or two other people. We each take it in turns to
throw our three darts at bull, you get 1point for a 25,
2points for a bull. Play first to 10, 20, 30 etc. It’s
good fun and improves your grouping. To make it a bit
more interesting, we sometimes insist the person with
the lowest score buys the next round!!!!
-
The other is a game suggested by Lionel Sams, along the
same lines as the game above, however this is one you
tend to play yourself. Throw 100darts at the bull,
again 1point for a 25, 2points for a bull. Keep track
of your score and aim to improve your score with each
attempt. Great tip for improving grouping – thanks
Lion!!!
Doubles
To practice
my doubles, I go around the board on doubles – throwing
1dart at each double, going from 1 to bull, ie, throwing
21darts. Set yourself a target of say 6 out of 21 to begin
with, once you achieve your target, increase it and start
again. My best and most reliable method of practice by
far!!
Another tip
for practicing doubles is halving them, ie, going for tops,
10s, 5s – 16s, 8s, 4s – 12s, 6s, 3s – 8s, 4s, 2s – 4s, 2s,
1s.
Finishing
I tend to
start at 50 and go up in ones. If I check out in two darts,
my third dart is always thrown at the bull. If there are a
few of us practicing in the pub, we normally start at 61 and
go up in 10s, again If I check out in 2darts my third dart
is always thrown at the bull.
Another
game to try if there are a few of you practicing together is
101. The object of the game is to get 10/20/30points. If
you check out 101 in 3darts, you get 2points. If you check
out 101 in 6darts you get 1point. First to 10/20/30points
wins.
General
If I am
practicing with someone else, we tend to practice games of
101, best of 5, then move on to 301, best of 5, then 501
best of 5. We also go around the board on doubles and play
bulls and 25s.
If I am
practicing on my own, I NEVER play games of 501, as I find
this just puts me off. I stick to practicing out shouts,
doubles, grouping etc.
