Berwick Open 2007
Photos from the Berwick
Open
HERE
After a last minute
decision to go to the
Berwick Open we managed
to book a caravan for
the Saturday night and
ended up with seven of
us heading to the
delightful place that is
Berwick upon Tweed……..
Unfortunately, my dad
had to work on the
Saturday morning so
myself, Jason, Bernie
and Brian travelled down
with my pairs partner
Susanna Young. Our
departure was delayed
due to Susanna’s husband
passing on the wrong
message and Susanna
ending up at the wrong
train station!! We
arrived about 30minutes
or so before the games
kicked off so had time
for a throw at the board
to loosen our arms.
First up for me was a
game against Susan Clark
(Durham). Wasn’t a
particularly great game
– first games never are
– but was a reasonably
comfortable 2-0 win for
me. Next up was Sally
Oliver (Durham); this
was a slightly better
match which saw me win
2-0 again. My next
opponent was Angela
Kirkwood (Durham,
again!); Angela played
very well in the first
leg and I just couldn’t
get going at all.
Fortunately for me
Angela struggled on her
doubles and got stuck on
double one! I managed
to pick my game up a
little and after several
missed shots at double
two won a very long
first leg. First leg
was awful so I gave
myself a little talking
to and told myself to
make up for it in the
next leg which I
did….finished the leg in
18darts to give me
another 2-0 victory.
After winning the match
against Angela I was
straight back on to face
Margaret “Pricey” Price
(I’ll let you guess
where she was from!!).
Pricey is a very slow
but very steady player,
a female Dennis
Priestley if you like.
I would say it was a
very evenly matched game
which thankfully I won
2-1.
Final match of the day
saw me against Scottish
Internationalist Brenda
Hunter (Fife). I have
played Brenda quite a
few times before but
don’t think I ever beat
her until Saturday. I
took the first leg,
Brenda took the second
leg, Brenda was slightly
in front in the third
leg and set herself up a
nice little finish. I
had 112 left and thought
to myself you done this
against Anastasia (at
the world masters 2000)
so why not do it again.
First dart landed in the
corner of treble 5,
second dart right in the
middle of treble 19,
third dart right in
double tops. I had won
the match 2-1 with a 112
checkout and had gained
a place in the semi
finals of the ladies
singles. I’m not sure
who was more proud – me,
my dad or my fiancé
Jason. There was more
good news when I found
out that Susanna was
also in the semi
finals!!
I
wasn’t feeling too good
on the Sunday, not sure
what it was but it
definitely wasn’t
alcohol related – I only
had three drinks on the
Saturday night. My head
was thumping and I had
that sickly feeling in
my throat. Susanna and
I played our first
doubles game and
couldn’t buy a double to
save ourselves and ended
up getting beat 2-0
which meant a long wait
sitting around waiting
for the semi finals…..
Susanna was playing in
the first semi final
against Lynn Cowan
(Lanarkshire) it was a
good game with Lynn
winning 2-0. Next up
was me against Lorraine
Hyde (Grampian). Didn’t
get off to a very good
start when the MC
shouted me up on stage
and said I was from East
Renfrewshire (Anyone in
Scottish darts knows
mistaking Renfrewshire
for East Renfrewshire is
a BIG mistake!!)
Neither of us played
very well in the first
leg, Lorraine struggled
to hit her double and I
struggled to get to
one! Lorraine
eventually took the leg
and pretty quickly took
the second leg too. I
couldn’t get going at
all and wish I could
have given Lorraine a
better game.
The final, Lynn Cowan V
Lorraine Hyde, was a
very good match and Lynn
took the title beating
Lorraine 2-0. Very well
done to Lynn (who also
won the doubles with
Linda Marshall) and well
done to Lorraine too for
her performances at the
weekend. Tremendous
talent for a 17year old,
definitely a star in the
making!!
Next up for me is the
Vauxhall Holiday Park
darts weekend in Great
Yarmouth!! Looking
forward to it! Only
17days to go.
